Homemade Pop Tarts (aka Glorified Pie For Breakfast)

Lookie Cookie!! My Williams-Sonoma toaster pastry press arrived yesterday!!

I tried making homemade Pop Tarts without a press once, and they looked almost too ugly to eat... Almost. Here's a quick run down of how to make your own Pop Tarts! Trust me, you're gonna want a press:

I use my Mom's basic pie crust recipe:

3 cups flour
1 1/2 cups shortening
1/2 tsp salt
10 (or so) Tbsp ice water
Mix together to form a dough ball. Refrigerate for 30 minutes before rolling. If you slept in this morning like I did, just start rollin' baby! I do not claim to be a professional chef btw... let's make that perfectly clear right now ;)
Roll the dough really thin. If you do this right, you should wind up with 10 or so complete pastries. Cut your pastries with the large cutter. Place on a cookie sheet lined with kitchen parchment. Add about a Tablespoon of topping. We use mini chocolate chips or strawberry freezer jam. Top with another pastry. Press firmly with the small press. Bake at 425 for 10 minutes. Combine a cup of powdered sugar with a tiny bit of milk for the glaze. Top with sprinkles & eat while warm & gooey :)
You can fill these babies with whatever you want... marshmallows, Nutella, fresh fruit, brown sugar & cinnamon... endless possibilities. You can also use a refrigerated pie crust! There's a pastry recipe on the box as well, but it's complicated... and as I mentioned before, I slept in.

Yes, you could just open a cardboard box & zap a "proper" Pop Tart for 10 seconds, but it wouldn't taste this **AMAZING**, and it certainly wouldn't be this much fun :)
